Beginning of a petunia painting

I start a new painting by drawing directly on the canvas with a NO2 pencil. I do as much detail as I need to layout the painting in the first session to cover the canvas. My belief is that you do not have a painting until the canvas is covered.

cover the canvas is a mantra for me. Especially after the initial block in of dark shapes. If I don't completely cover the canvas with paint I'm unable to measure the other colors and values. My last few paintings, I've started by putting down the lightest lights and painting around them with the dark background.
This seems to work better than starting with the background which I often make TOO LIGHT!
